On January 15, 1865, the Vigadó of Pest, a true gem of Hungarian Romantic architecture, opened its doors to the public. Designed by Frigyes Feszl, the Vigadó has since stood as an emblematic venue for cultural and social life in Budapest. Though its unique architectural style was initially met with scepticism, the building’s beauty and historical significance have cemented its legacy over the past 160 years.
The Vigadó’s Storied Past
Before the Vigadó, the site housed a defensive roundel that was demolished in 1789. Mihály Pollack, architect of the Hungarian National Museum, built the original structure, the Redoute, in 1832. This early concert hall hosted significant events, such as Ferenc Liszt’s post-flood charity concert in 1838 and the first National Assembly during the 1848 Revolution. Tragically, the building was destroyed in 1849 during the siege of Buda.
Frigyes Feszl took on the task of redesigning the Vigadó in 1859, and the new structure was unveiled with a grand ball in 1865. Over the decades, the Vigadó became a hub of cultural life, hosting legendary performances by Johann Strauss, Johannes Brahms, and Ernő Dohnányi, among others. It was also the venue for historic celebrations, such as the coronation ball of Franz Joseph I in 1867 and the unification of Pest, Buda, and Óbuda in 1873.
Restoration and Revival
The Vigadó suffered significant damage during World War II, but its historic importance spared it from demolition. Listed as a historic monument in 1954, it underwent several restorations, including a major renovation in 1980 and a full restoration to its original splendour in 2014, under the ownership of the Hungarian Academy of Arts. Today, the Vigadó stands as a testament to Budapest’s rich cultural heritage.
